Prologue

“Jasper!” I heard Alice scream to the top of the house. “Get down here!”

“Alice, do you have to be so loud? It’s too early to be shouting.” Rosalie moaned next to me. It was true, although Alice was small, she knew how to scream. Plus, I didn’t really understand why she was screaming at Jasper. He had done nothing wrong and I knew for a fact she really, really liked him. And so did he, but both refused to believe me.

“She’s right, Alice. We might need to cut your voice box out and sell it. I’m sure it would be pricy considering the pitch,” Emmett teased with his arm wrapped around Rosalie.

“Shut up, Emmett, or I swear I will come up there and rip your head off,” She threatened, scowling up at his high stature of 6’5 from her 4’10. Rose and I burst out laughing while Emmett looked rather scared. Sometimes I wondered how they could be twins with the height difference. We waited a few more minutes until we all seemed to get bored – either that or needed of caffeine. I didn’t even like coffee.

“Jasper!” Alice screamed again. “It cannot take that long to pick out some DVDs! Why do you keep them up there anyway?”

“Because,” he said, coming down the stairs. “There’s more room upstairs. Shelves and shelves of room for hours and hours of movies,” he said, grinning like a mad man

“Don’t go all psycho on us,” Emmett muttered.

Psycho! How could I forget that, it’s a classic Hitchcock!” he ran back upstairs again. We all scowled at his retreating figure and then Emmett. He just shrugged.

It was the last day of the summer holidays and Jasper had the idea to invite us all around for a film fest. Thankfully, his parents were out to the zoo with his younger brother Peter so we had the house to ourselves. Jasper had a slight obsession with films, young or old, he loved them. He also loved Alice, but as I said before, he wouldn’t believe us. Our group was odd like that. Rosalie and Emmett were the only official couple but Alice and Jasper were together in their own way. Technically they weren’t but in their hearts they were, if that made sense. Each of them would get asked out by someone else but would always decline because they loved each other. It was sweet really and I just wished they’d hurry up at work it out. If not I’d have to do something drastic. Still, I was the odd one out. I had no one that looked at me the way Jasper looked at Alice. I had no one that would do special things for me like Emmett would Rosalie. Not that I was too worried about it though, I preferred it on my own most of the time but there were those few times I’d get clingy and want someone like that. They weren’t often and I hid them well when they were.

Eventually and when I say eventually I mean eventually Alice had to shriek at Jasper to get him to ‘get his ass down here’, we put in the first movie into the DVD player. The Butterfly Effect. Rosalie and Emmett took one sofa while Alice and Jasper took the other. I sat on the bean bag in the middle of the floor. It was quite a serious film with a sad ending so we put on a little happier one after it. Love Actually. Alice had clearly put a request in for that. She had a thing about accents, possibly something to do with Jasper’s slight southern twang. He had moved when he was ten and quickly fell into our group. The rest of us had lived in Forks for all of our lives. The next movie was Psycho and Jasper wouldn’t shut up about the shots. If you asked him about his favourite movie it was like telling Alice you would go on a three month shopping spree with her. Not fun. Although, I could definitely see Jasper having something to do with film, he had enough charisma for it and that was only on his list of qualities as Alice liked to call them. All of us but Jasper jumped at the scary parts – I didn’t want to think about how many times he’d seen it. Afterwards, we took a short break for lunch. Rosalie had had the ingenious plan to put pizzas in the oven before the movie finished so we didn’t waste any time.

“Emmett!” she said, slapping his hand away from a slice. “Wait ‘till they’re cool.”

“I don’t like cold food, Rose,” he whined.

“Okay, that’s a lie if ever I heard one,” I said from in the other room.

“It’s true,” Alice joined in. “You’d eat mom and dad out of our house if you got the chance. I mean seriously,” she sighed, exasperated. “I know growing boys need to eat but you really don’t need to grow anymore. You’ll turn into the hulk if you’re not careful.” Suddenly a fork flew through the air. Alice only just dodged it in time. Jasper saw the whole thing and his protective side for Alice flared. I rolled my eyes at their sibling war. This happened every other day, if not always.

“You’re washing up Emmett,” he said simply.

“What? I’m a guest!”

“Sure you are until you start throwing kitchen utensils and stealing food,” he smirked as Emmett huffed.

After Emmett ate most of the pizza and washed up, we started on the next DVD. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, which I can safely say we all enjoyed, even though having seen it repeatedly in the past. Alice went to pop some popcorn and Jasper said he had a brilliant classic for us, 2001: A Space Odyssey and also warned us it took a while to get rolling. Alice came back with cans of drink and two bowls of popcorn. Emmett looked fairly bored already and ended up falling asleep near the beginning. Jasper threw his empty Coke can at his chest.

“What the hell?” he jumped.

“Do. Not. Fall. Asleep.” Jasper growled.

“Why not?! It’s just monkeys jumping around a slab of rock.”

“That ‘slab of rock’ is vital to the plot line!”

“Guys,” I said serenely. “Cool it.”

Emmett did, sooner or later, get into the movie after ‘the monkeys went away’. I had heard that it was a good film and had some amazing reviews; I’d just never got around to seeing it. I noticed a lot of TV shows had stolen parts of the plot, Futurama for one. I took a fleeting look at the two couples; Rosalie and Emmett were cuddled together and Alice and Jasper would take sly glances at each other when they thought the other wasn’t looking. I smirked and Rosalie gave me a questioning look. I pointed at them with my eyes – a hard thing if I do say so myself – and her expression mirrored mine. We’d have to tease Alice about it later. When the movie finished, we sat staring at the credits as they rolled by. ‘Wow’ was all I could think. There was silence for about a minute.

“I don’t get it,” Emmett mumbled. We all turned to him, dumbfounded. “What? I don’t.”

“Well,” I started, ignoring Emmett. “I don’t think I’ll ever doubt your movie tastes, Jasper. Not that I ever did, of course,” I put in.

“Glad to hear it,” he said, looking smug. Abruptly, Alice screeched, a look of joy on her face. We all swung our heads at her, wondering what she was doing.

She was staring at the clock on the wall, like it was some sort of trophy she had worked all her life to get. “It’s time,” she said evilly. She screeched again and ran out, arms flailing as she dashed into the hall. We all looked at Jasper, giving him a ‘she’s your responsibility’ look and he raised his eyebrows. Then he rolled his eyes, shook and went off to pursue the wild girl. There were mumbles from another room and I guessed he was persuading her to tell him what was going on.

“What are we going to do with them?” Rosalie sighed.

“Hopefully they’ll work it out on their own but if worst comes to worst, we can always lock them in a closet.”

“I like that plan, Bella. I’ll make sure I’ll come and find you.”

“We,” Rosalie put in with a scowl in Emmett’s direction.

“We,” he agreed, putting his arm around her shoulders and pulling her closer to him.

Okay, I’ll admit it. I didn’t like being the fifth wheel. It got awkward, very, very awkward. Everyone seemed to have their future partners set out in front of them while I was stuck in the deep end, wondering what the hell I was going to do with my life. I knew that Rosalie and Emmett were destined for each other and Jasper and Alice were the same. I knew they would never leave me out but I didn’t like…not knowing. I wanted to know where I’d be in ten years time. It was reassuring to know but I couldn’t see myself anywhere special. I knew what my strengths were in school, English and Art, but again, I had no idea where that could take me.

In time, Jasper and Alice returned but Alice was still wearing that creepy grin. Jasper wore a gentle smile – the one Rose and I had named ‘the Alice smile’ – and was leaning on the door frame. “Stand up then!” Alice said. The three of us did, waiting. From there she directed us to her car – a red Toyota Avensis, though she was saving up for a yellow Porsche. It was her dream car and she had vowed that she would get one before she died. She did try and save but her shopping trips didn’t help too much. We were shoved in the back seat while Jasper took shotgun. Rosalie and I would only put up with it because we were hoping for some chemistry between them and while Rose wouldn’t mind being pressed into Emmett, I did. And how did he end up in the middle anyway?!

“Where are w–”

“Shut it, brother,” Alice snapped.

“She’s good, you know. There’s no need to worry,” Jasper said with a nonchalant nod next to her.

“You say that now…” I mumbled and Alice glowered at me. She was a good driver when she put her mind to it…or had a reason. We in the back were still waiting to find this reason out while Jasper kept turning around to look at our confused, squashed faces. He obviously knew. Alice could only keep once secret from him at a time and at the moment she was guarding her heart, tragic as that may seem. I wish she wouldn’t.

We pulled up in a deserted parking lot.

“Alice, we still have one more day left. There’s no need to drop us off at school,” Emmett joked but we were really all totally confused at why she’d bring us here of all places. After we had fallen out of the car we followed her to the front office where Ms. Cope was sitting, nose in a book. She looked up as we entered.

“How can I help you kids?”

Alice grinned at us before speaking to her. “We’d like our schedules, please.”

A chorus of ‘oh’s rang out before we went to collect them. Alice was brilliant. Who else would think to round us all up to find out what classes we have before school? That girl deserved a medal. One by one we queued up to retrieve the pieces of paper from a rather bemused and pleased Ms. Cope, happy to see students coming early and willing to find out their lessons. She thought it was because we were total boffins but we really just wanted to see who was in each others’ class. Besides, the term intelligent was preferred around us because we most certainly were not nerds, nor were we stupid.

“Okay, Rose, you go first,” Alice chirped when we were outside, standing around her car.
“So, first Government…”

Everyone said their lessons aloud while Alice scribbled furiously down into her note book, working out. My lessons were English, Art, Trigonometry, Spanish, one hour for lunch, Biology and finally Gym. I did not look forward to Gym one bit.

“Right, Bella, you have a lesson with each of us. English with Jasper, Art with myself,” she grinned. “Trig with Emmett and Spanish with Rose. No one in Biology, I’m afraid but then you get me and Emmett in Gym.” I listened with a half ear to the conversation, grinning at Rose and Emmett when Alice and Jasper blushed when she said that they had every class but second and sixth period together. This was the year it would happen. I could tell.

We watched a few other movies, the last being Cruel Intentions that was based on the 18th century French novel Dangerous Liaisons. It had us girls quietly sobbing at the end and the boys started laughing at us. Rose, Alice and I all hit Jasper for making us cry and had Alice drop us off.

The next day was going to be the beginning my last year at Forks High School before college and oh fuck, what a year it would be.

Glacialis Nex: Overview

There comes a time in everyone’s existence when they ask themselves that one defining question.

WHY.....

Whether quietly, in the inky darkness, out loud searching to a higher being for guidance or with a tear in their eye and a heavy heart, they all ask it.

Every single one of them.

Friendships, relationships and alliances come and go and that question resounds in your mind with the ferocity of a new born star. The very same question can fade into the dark and bleak space of a black hole, ignorant to what could have been, what would have been. They ignore the way that, just like the new star, they could have shone with another, feeding and nurturing the family that they have grown up around and created. The family that they rely and depend on for sustenance and existence. The question spins in its own orbit, either to spark something in the mind you have or to sit alone in the cold, a reassuring guidance for travellers lost on their way. Each are different, each have different meanings, and each have different consequences……

One thing that they all have in common is that indelible mark they burn into the hearts and minds of all the people who pass their way, look up at that one point in time and see deeper than that single point of light, more than a burning ball of gas.

Would they change something if they could? Apologize to those they’ve hurt? Tell those who they haven’t what they really feel? Stay away from those who they should of?

If they knew what would have been, would they do it again, or change the road they travel down at the crossroad? If they had the choice to save a life, save their own life, would they?

And they ask it.

Why.

I'll probably just link a load of Twilight Fanfiction stuff here (yay!) because I'm giving up using LiveJournal. Blogger all the way! Hahahaha.
I'm addicted to these things, though. It probably isn't too good.
